The Gateway to the NC500

Fort William - Where Every NC500 Journey Should Begin

The North Coast 500 officially starts and ends in Inverness, but most travellers, especially those flying into Edinburgh or Glasgow drive north through Glencoe to Fort William first. It's one of the most spectacular drives in Europe, and Highwinds Lodge is right at the end of it.

We sit at the foot of Ben Nevis in Torlundy, just three miles from Fort William town centre. From here it's a straightforward 90-minute drive to Inverness to begin the NC500 loop. That makes us the natural place to stop, stock up, and settle in before the adventure begins.

And when you've completed all 516 miles of the route and you're heading back south? We're here waiting with comfortable beds, a fully equipped kitchen, and a cinema room to collapse into.

Getting Here

The Drive Up, an Adventure in Itself

Most NC500 travellers start by flying into Edinburgh or Glasgow. From either city, the drive to Highwinds Lodge takes around 3 hours through some of the most spectacular scenery in the UK.

The A82 takes you along the shores of Loch Lomond, past Tyndrum, and into Glencoe. A valley so dramatic it regularly features in 'best drives in the world' lists. You'll want to stop multiple times for photos.

From Glencoe, it's a short drive through Ballachulish and along Loch Linnhe to Fort William. Highwinds is on the A82 in Torlundy, three miles north of the town centre. You'll pass us on your way to Inverness.

NC500 Questions

Planning Your NC500 Trip

Everything you need to know about using Highwinds Lodge as your North Coast 500 base.

How far is Fort William from the NC500 start in Inverness?
About 90 minutes by car via the A82 along the Great Glen. It's a beautiful drive alongside Loch Ness a fitting warm-up for the NC500 itself.
Is Fort William actually on the NC500 route?
Not officially, the NC500 is a loop starting and ending in Inverness. But Fort William is the natural stopping point for anyone driving up from Edinburgh, Glasgow, or England. It's where you break the journey before heading to Inverness to start the loop.
How long does the NC500 take?
Most people take 5-7 days to drive the full 516-mile loop comfortably, with plenty of stops for walks, photos, and exploring. You can rush it in 3 days, but you'd miss most of what makes it special.
Can I leave luggage at Highwinds while I do the NC500?
If you let us know in advance we may be able to sort out storing your belongings while you do the NC500.
What's the best time of year to do the NC500?
May to September offers the longest days and best weather. May/June and September are our favourites. Fewer crowds than peak summer, midges are less ferocious, and the scenery is stunning. Avoid mid-July to mid-August if you dislike crowds.
Do I need a 4x4 for the NC500?
No, the NC500 is all on paved roads. A standard car is fine. The main challenge is single-track roads with passing places in the far north. If you're not used to driving on the left, the quieter sections are a great place to build confidence before heading into busier areas.
Where should I stock up on supplies before the NC500?
Fort William has all the major supermarkets (Morrisons, Aldi, Lidl, Co-op) plus outdoor gear shops. Stock up here, options become much more limited once you head north of Inverness. Highwinds has a full kitchen, so you can prep and pack food before you go.
Can I bring my dog on the NC500?
Absolutely and Highwinds is dog-friendly too (up to 3 dogs, secure fenced grounds). Many NC500 accommodation options accept dogs, but book ahead as pet-friendly places fill up fast. We can recommend dog-friendly stops along the route.
How many people can stay at Highwinds?
Up to 10 guests across five en-suite bedrooms (mix of doubles, twins, and a family room). Perfect for a group of friends or a multi-family trip. The whole lodge is yours, no other guests.
Is there a minimum stay?
We generally have a 2-night minimum, which works perfectly for an NC500 stopover. Arrive one evening, explore the area the next day, then head to Inverness on day three. Check our availability calendar for current options.
